PEARLAND
Brazoria County´s fastest growing city is Pearland. The city was officially established in 1894 when it was a small railroad switching station. However, European visitors first visited this area in 1528! Pearland was devastated by the Great Hurricane of 1900 as businesses, farms and homes were all destroyed. The residents who remained in the area dug in and turned the town around after years of struggle.
Today, Pearland encompasses 72.3 square miles and more than 36,000 residents call it home. In fact, Pearland grew by 116 percent from the 1990 Census to the 2000 Census. The town is a mere 15 minutes away from the Texas Medical Center and some of Houston´s cultural highlights including the Houston Ballet, Grand Opera and Symphony.

Education
• Public (k-12): The Pearland Independent School District is one of the leading districts in the Gulf Coast region. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) in 2001 rated the district "exemplary," which is the highest designation awarded by the agency. Encompassing 43.5 square miles, the district has a student enrollment of 11,263. All 13 campuses are fully accredited by TEA. Two new school campuses currently are under construction.
• Colleges:
The Pearland College Center, established in August 1998, offers university transfer courses (such as history, math, sociology, government and accounting), which could lead to an associate degree for students transferring to a four-year university. Other offerings include a variety of technical courses including computer science, office administration, criminal justice, Microsoft certification, real estate and emergency management.
• Alvin Community College: Founded in 1948, Alvin Community College is a public, two-year comprehensive college that is dedicated to promoting the dignity of all individuals and encouraging learning as a lifelong process.
