CLEAR LAKE
Clear Lake, Texas, was Clear Lake City until it was annexed by the city of Houston in 1977. The original 30,000 acres was purchased by Humble Oil and Refining (now Exxon) in 1938. The area developed very slowly until NASA decided to build its Manned Spacecraft Center (Johnson Space Center) in the area in 1961. Shortly thereafter, Humble Oil announced plans to develop 15,000 acres west of the Manned Spacecraft Center under a new venture called Friendswood Development Company. Clear Lake City officially opened on Sept. 15, 1963.
Today, the Clear Lake region of the Greater Houston area is an excellent mixture of residential areas, high-tech companies and many businesses. Home to more than 265,000 residents, Clear Lake has 550 high tech businesses. Industries served in this area include aerospace, IT, petrochemical, environmental and health care just to name a few. Municipalities that fall under the Clear Lake "umbrella" include Houston (the acreage in this area), Friendswood, Kemah, League City, Nassau Bay, Seabrook and Webster. According to Bay Area Houston, the Clear Lake area´s average household income is $70,000, making it the highest in the state of Texas.
