HOUSTON
It was near the banks of the Buffalo Bayou that brothers Augustus C. and John K. Allen founded Houston on Aug. 30, 1836, paying a mere $1.40 per acre for the city´s original 6,642 acres. Named after the general that led the fight for Texas Independence against Mexico, Houston was the capital of the Republic of Texas from 1837 to 1840.
Hello and welcome to the City of Houston, Texas, named after one of Texas´ most prominent citizens, Sam Houston. The City of Houston is also known as Space City because it also happens to be home to the NASA space center. Houston is one of the largest Cities in the State of Texas, its also home to the Astrodome and the JP Morgan Chase Tower ? Texas´ tallest building. There´s something in Houston for everyone, from the beautiful suburbs to the great entertainment and dining centers.
From the discovery of oil at Spindletop in 1901 to the building of the Astrodome, the "eighth wonder of the world," to having Houston become the first word spoken from the moon, the city has a vibrant history and some of the friendliest citizens you´ll find anywhere in the United States. Today, the fourth largest city in the United States covers more than 10,062 square miles, an area larger than New Jersey, New Hampshire or Vermont. Houston´s housing costs are 21 percent below the national average and 45 percent below the average for the largest 30 metropolitan areas. In addition, Houston´s grocery prices are 22 percent below the major-metropolitan areas average, health care is 15 percent less than average and residents pay no state or municipal income tax.

Houston is a city that´s also diverse in culture, where walking down the various streets you may hear over 90 different languages spoken. Along with culture and history being on display, there are also museums, attractions and events going on throughout the city so anything you are interested in, you will surely find to explore and learn.
The city has a diverse range of restaurants and cuisines from across the world. Houston residents do eat out more than any other city in the country, that´s also why there are over 11,000 restaurants in the area.
A great deal of the local population in Houston are young adults which means plenty of people to power its solid and growing economy. The cost of living is just about right ? not too high and not too low. Houston has a bustling economy with many attractions and things to do, with a theater scene that nearly rivals New York and a nightlife Los Angeles would be jealous of. With home prices at a much more reasonable level than other major metropolitan areas, there is something for everyone.
Education
Public (K-12): Twenty-three public school districts lie entirely or partly within Harris county with the seven surrounding counties containing another 38 districts. More can be learned about the various school districts by visiting the Texas Education Agency´s Web site.
For adults and other people looking for specific trade skills, there are many schools that specialize in areas such health professions, science and performing arts. And many schools that provide education with a religious background and a wide range of private schools.
Houston is also home to over 60 institutions of higher learning including the University of Houston, which is ranked in the top tier by U.S. News & World Report´s Top 100 Law schools in the country. Houston´s Rice University is also ranked in the same report among top overall universities in the U.S.
Colleges and Universities: The greater Houston area is home to 16 universities and 10 community college systems.
